VERTIGO – THE STUDY GUIDE FOR THE FILM
What group of students wouldn't enjoy the suspense and surprising "twists" in this 1958 classic by Alfred Hitchcock? The film brings together Jimmy Stewart and Kim Novak. The film's theme of play-acting and/or remaking a woman by male domination is also seen in George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion (My Fair Lady).
Start your students off with thought-provoking questions that are connected with VERTIGO.

1) Do you believe that someone out of the past, someone dead, can enter and take possession of a living being?

2) A central theme of this film is betrayal of trust. Think about a time when someone betrayed a trust you had placed in him or her. How did you feel when you first realized the betrayal? How did you react to your feelings?

3) At what point does love become obsession? If obsession takes over, is love still present? (Keep this question in mind as the film progresses.)

This 16-page guide provides all of the following:
  • cast information
  • plot summary
  • general and cinematic vocabulary
  • literary terms highlighted in the film and film notes
  • “around San Francisco” (detailing the sights seen in the film)

  • questions for discussion after the film
  • a post-film test
