KERNELS FOR JOURNALS |
 |
Get your students excited about journal writing with
KERNELS FOR JOURNALS. |
All you need for journal starters comes in this kit. You'll get two hundred ideas (kernels) for journal entries, and then you can choose any number of ways to have your students apply them:
-
choose an entry you think is most relevant for all the students to address;
-
have a different student draw an entry each day or every few days;
-
let the student who scored the highest on a recent test draw several entries and
then choose the one to which the class responds;
-
let students each draw one entry and then barter with each other if they want to
trade for another entry;
-
allow the students to draw separate entries for each to address;
-
pick a student to draw an entry, then have the class members discuss the entry
before they begin writing;
-
allow the students to adjust or amend the entry in some way that is more relevant
to their lives;
-
announce the entry for the following day so that students can think about it
overnight.
Any way you choose to use them, your classes are sure to be more involved in their
journal writing with the prompts included in KERNELS FOR JOURNALS.
Your copy of
KERNELS FOR JOURNALS

Sample kernels include the following:
LETTING   BYGONES  BE  BYGONES
When were you involved in an argument that now seems trivial?
What were the circumstances?  How was the issue finally resolved?
ODD   HOMEWORK
What has been the oddest homework (or in-class) assignment you've had?
What class was it in?  What do you think the purpose of the
assignment was?  How did you complete the assignment?
A   NEW   SCHOOL
If you could add two classes to your schedule, what would they be?
(These do not have to be classes currently offered; they may be classes that your
ideal school would offer.)   Why would you choose these classes?
  How do you think the classes should be conducted?
What, specifically, would you like to study in these classes?
JUST   CALL   ME   ANN   LANDERS
If you could give five pieces of advice to someone five years younger than yourself,
what would the advice be?  How do you think you would have
received this advice if it had been given to you?
NOW   THAT'S   FUNNY!
What is the funniest joke you've ever heard?  (Make sure it's clean!)
  From whom did you hear it? To whom have you told it?
AN   IRRESISTIBLE   AD
If you worked for an advertising agency, what type of advertisement would you
devise for your favorite fast food restaurant?  Think about whom or
what you'd feature in the ad, what catchy slogan you'd devise, what type of layout
you'd want for the ad, and any other ways you would capture the reader's attention.
